Uptown Waterloo Square Art Installation

Harmony in Motion through Living Rhythms

This project centers around transforming four electrical utility boxes along Willis Way and King Street in the heart of Uptown Waterloo Square. Before this transformation, these boxes were purely functional, sterile steel fixtures sitting in plain sight, acting as visual distractions in an otherwise vibrant public space. They were practically screaming to be turned into fun, engaging, and energizing public artwork.

By replacing cold metal with bright, lively compositions, this installation adds colour, movement, and joy to the streetscape for visitors of all ages. The artwork bridges the gap between urban infrastructure and public art, directly representing the spirit of the area, the events that take place within the square, and Uptown Waterloo’s unique geographical identity nestled within the natural landscapes of Ontario.

The designs for this project are focused on expressing and celebrating the interconnections of music, dance, nature and community… all aspects which are found within the Uptown Waterloo Square, showcased within events and throughout the surrounding Waterloo region.

The vision for the artwork is to showcase and celebrate how we are all brought together through the joy of music, dancing and self expression as a community. The natural elements throughout this series are used to show the interconnection that we have with nature. The natural world is alive all around us and is connected to us on a level many do not realize, and some take for granted… Nature is moving, vibrating and thriving alongside us in a symbiotic manner through the music of life. The pollinating seeds throughout this series are symbols of movement, growth and rebirth; in essence they represent nature dancing alongside us.

The ‘Enlightened Flowers’ featured throughout this series are symbols of nature’s consciousness and how nature is in tune with us and the universe. I wanted to design these elements to present nature as a ‘character’ of sorts, as they are as alive as we are! We are all one.

The boxes were designed with bright and vibrant colours, characters and design elements to be eye catching and engaging, while helping greatly to brighten up and energize the space. The designs and colours are engaging for all to enjoy, from children to adults.

Utility Box 1

The Vibe Generators

Welcoming Beats & Community Heart

📍Location:

Positioned on Willis Way along the sidewalk and a primary pathway from Willis Way into the square.

Positioned in a highly visible walkthrough area, this box takes full advantage of the location by featuring three fun, bright-coloured characters that directly greet passersby from every main direction. They are designed to bring an immediate sense of warmth, fun, and engagement to anyone entering or moving through the square, inviting even as much as a subtle smile or warm feelings from seeing a fun, bright-coloured character with a beaming smile on their face welcoming them as they enter and pass through the square.

  • The Vibe Generator:
One character holds an old-school stereo, blasting music and vibrant energy straight into the neighbourhood.
  • The Ambassador of Love:
A second character holds an enlightened flower in one hand while raising an open palm to say hello to the great people of Uptown Waterloo. Inside the character’s palm sits a heart containing a diamond. The heart symbolizes a deep love for the community, music, and the surrounding natural world, while the diamond represents the Waterloo region itself.
  • The Keyboardist:
The third character greets passersby with a beaming smile while playing a keyboard, adding live musical performance into the welcoming committee.

Utility Box 2

Salsa Sonics & Sasquatch

Celebration of Salsa, Local Wildlife & Sacred Lore

📍Location:

The largest canvas in the square, positioned right next to Box 1 as a direct visual extension.

Features Salsa dancers surrounded by an active, vibrant, and energetic scene. Salsa in the Square is a beloved, high-energy staple of Uptown Waterloo that brings together people from all walks of life to dance, connect, and move as one under the open sky. It serves as a true celebration of life, joy, and collective expression.

The composition captures that electric atmosphere: the rhythm of the music pulsing through the air, feet moving to the beat, and the infectious energy of a community coming together. By immortalizing these moments on the square’s largest canvas, the artwork honors the rich cultural traditions that animate our public spaces and invites every passerby to feel part of the dance.

  • The Northern Cardinal:
A personal homage to the everyday beauty of Waterloo. Growing up in Toronto surrounded by pigeons, seeing bright cardinals almost daily here in Waterloo is a constant source of joy. The piece features a pair of cardinals swooping past alongside musical notes in the air.
  • The Sasquatch:
Peering out from behind a hill and tree, smiling ear to ear as he watches the cardinals and dancers, the Sasquatch draws from deep lore and personal fascination. Originating from the Sts’ailes First Nation word sasq’ets (“hairy man”), traditional oral histories view the being not as a monster, but as a sacred spirit, an environmental protector, and a relative moving between physical and spiritual realms. Here, the Sasquatch represents a protector of nature and a symbol of real magic: a sacred, gentle presence watching over the harmony of our world.

Utility Box 3

The Music Lover

Soaking Up the Vibe on Willis Way

📍Location:

Welcoming visitors as they walk down Willis Way toward the main corner.

The utility box hardware itself becomes a full character enjoying the music. The physical structure is built right into the design, creating a fun, smiling figure who listens to the music within the square and acts as a welcomer to kids and adults coming around the corner into the square.

  • Hardware Integration:
The handle on the box lines up just under the nose as a septum ring, and the top section forms the character’s toque.
  • Botanical Accents:
The character is holding an enlightened flower in his hand, with another tucked neatly into his front shirt pocket.
  • Sonic Backing:
The back of this electrical box features a trumpet at the back of the figure, playing music notes into the air and filling the space with sonic tones and good vibes into the square and right into the ear of this music lover.

Utility Box 4

The Accordion Player

Heritage & Interactive Harmony

📍Location:

Positioned right at the corner of Willis Way and King Street.

Positioned right at the high-traffic corner where Willis Way meets King Street, Box 4 is built to be a fully 360-degree interactive visual experience. As pedestrians, commuters, and drivers navigate around the corner, the artwork continuously evolves depending on the vantage point. It blends an homage to the region’s deep cultural roots with a playful visual narrative, celebrating how shared music and heritage form the building blocks of our local community identity.

  • Front (Heritage Homage):
Pays homage to the local German history, featuring a character in stylized lederhosen. The protruding panel box is transformed into an accordion played face-on. This front character welcomes visitors to the space and greets passersby walking, driving, and commuting along King Street.
  • Sides (Cross-Cultural Harmony):
The characters on the side panels intersect with the hands of the German accordion player featured when looking at the front of the electrical box. Depending on the direction you look at it, different characters are playing the accordion, symbolizing the community and togetherness amongst all of the peoples and cultures that call the Waterloo Region home.
  • Back (Musical Jam):
Features an energetic scene of trumpets, vinyl records, a keyboard, and enlightened flowers all vibing together.
